Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Cycle of OCD

Main Types of OCD:

  • Contamination

  • Symmetry

  • Magical Thinking

  • Scrupulosity (Religious or Moral)

  • Sexual

  • Harm

  • Relationship

OCD is not just the need to be tidy and clean. It is not just worrying about germs or needing to do something the same amount of times, every time. For many people with OCD, their bodies and brains feel like a war zone. Like they can never escape from the worst parts of them and are terrified of people finding out who they really are.

In reality, these thoughts and feelings are not defining characteristics. They are OCD, not you. While the exact causes are unknown, we do know that OCD often arises as a way to find control in an otherwise turbulent and alarming environment. And genetics, biology, temperament, and childhood trauma are all risk factors that can increase your chances of developing the disorder.

The gold standard for OCD treatment is Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). In my office, I use ERP as well as somatic and mindfulness interventions to help clients separate themselves from their OCD thoughts and decrease their distress. Clients will then feel more in control of their thoughts and reality and feel more them rather than it. If you feel as if you are alone in your fight against your OCD thoughts, this is the time and place for you.
